Inappropriate Sacrifice.

Just sent a few of songs I wrote off for evaluation to the Nashville Songwriters Association International….

The first two… were “Christian” songs…. At least in some form….

Thought I’d “tithe” my work product. Maybe… earn some brownie points with God….

But… I read something today… that changed my mind….

I read something today that SCARED me….

Isaiah 1:10-11 English Standard Version (ESV)
10 Hear the word of the Lord,
you rulers of Sodom!
Give ear to the teaching[a] of our God,
you people of Gomorrah!
11 “What to me is the multitude of your sacrifices?
says the Lord;
I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams
and the fat of well-fed beasts;
I do not delight in the blood of bulls,
or of lambs, or of goats.
Footnotes:
[a] Isaiah 1:10 Or law

I want to make sure that I don’t take this out of context. Sodom and Gomorrah had already been destroyed, so the Prophet is speaking figuratively here. He is talking about Judah. The land of God’s people. Or… God’s Remnant. Or… as would be more applicable today… to US… America…. Americans…. American Christians….

What is God saying? To me….

I don’t want your tithe.
I don’t want your song.
I don’t want you to teach Sunday School. Or stand in a pulpit and preach.
I don’t want you to waste your time… trying to buy my favor… with just a little of what you value….
I don’t want your sacrifice.
Because no sacrifice you can ever make for me… can ever hope to be as valuable as the sacrifice I have already made for you….
Don’t give me what you think I want.
Don’t give me what you think I’ll accept.
Don’t give me what you want to get rid of….
Don’t give me what you think will impress your fellow Christians….
The only thing I want from you… Oh, Man… is you heart….

Is that all God has to say?
Of course not!

Isaiah 1:21-23 English Standard Version (ESV)
The Unfaithful City

21 How the faithful city
has become a whore,[a]
she who was full of justice!
Righteousness lodged in her,
but now murderers.
22 Your silver has become dross,
your best wine mixed with water.
23 Your princes are rebels
and companions of thieves.
Everyone loves a bribe
and runs after gifts.
They do not bring justice to the fatherless,
and the widow’s cause does not come to them.

[a] Isaiah 1:21 Or become unchaste

God expects… or rather… God DEMANDS… that I forgive… others….
People I love.
People I don’t.
People who hate me.
People I hate back.
Gays. Lesbians. Transexuals.
Atheists. Secular Humanists.
Muslims.
Illegal Aliens.
Progressive Liberals.
Hollywood. New York. Boston.
Joel Osteen….
Those who espouse Liberal Theology and Prosperity Gospel and Redemptive Movement Hermeneutics….
My oppressors….
People who abuse the Welfare System….
The IRS….
Obama. Pelosi.
Democrats.
The 1%ers.
The 99%ers.
Everyone….

And… after I’ve forgiven them… and even before… treat them with Justice…. And Mercy…. And… Love….

I do not agree with the tenets espoused by the Marriage Equality Movement. I believe Marriage is from God… and therefore must be between one man and one woman….
But… I believe equally strongly that I must treat gays and lesbians and transgenders fairly…. I must forgive their attacks on my beliefs…. That I must treat them with respect. Even Love….

Same for those people of color who are rioting because they feel disenfranchised. I don’t agree with everything they say, but they certainly have some points. I need to listen. I need to support them… where I legitimately can…. I need to forgive them. I need to love them.

Same thing for Atheists and Secular Humanists.

Same thing for Illegal Aliens….

Now…. Does the Bible even say that…?

I’m sure you saw this coming….

Isaiah 1:7-9 English Standard Version (ESV)

7 Your country lies desolate;
your cities are burned with fire;
in your very presence
foreigners devour your land;
it is desolate, as overthrown by foreigners.
8 And the daughter of Zion is left
like a booth in a vineyard,
like a lodge in a cucumber field,
like a besieged city.

9 If the Lord of hosts
had not left us a few survivors,
we should have been like Sodom,
and become like Gomorrah.

Why is America being invaded by Illegal Aliens?

Well… when my people first came to America around 300 years ago… WE were the invading aliens….

Maybe God is teaching us a lesson. Humbling us.

CERTAINLY what is happening is God’s Will….
Because God is Sovereign….

What happens next…?

Isaiah 1:24-31 English Standard Version (ESV)

24 Therefore the Lord declares,
the Lord of hosts,
the Mighty One of Israel:
“Ah, I will get relief from my enemies
and avenge myself on my foes.
25 I will turn my hand against you
and will smelt away your dross as with lye
and remove all your alloy.
26 And I will restore your judges as at the first,
and your counselors as at the beginning.
Afterward you shall be called the city of righteousness,
the faithful city.”

27 Zion shall be redeemed by justice,
and those in her who repent, by righteousness.
28 But rebels and sinners shall be broken together,
and those who forsake the Lord shall be consumed.
29 For they[a] shall be ashamed of the oaks
that you desired;
and you shall blush for the gardens
that you have chosen.
30 For you shall be like an oak
whose leaf withers,
and like a garden without water.
31 And the strong shall become tinder,
and his work a spark,
and both of them shall burn together,
with none to quench them.
Footnotes:
[a] Isaiah 1:29 Some Hebrew manuscripts you

God’s Will WILL be done. Because God is Sovereign.

Those who repent will be redeemed in Righteousness.

Those who don’t…. Well… Justice is coming irregardless….
A Judge…. A Counselor….
Seems like I’ve heard those words other places….
And… a purifying… all-consuming… fire….

God is jealous….

Maybe there is absolutely nothing to worry about.
Maybe God doesn’t even exist….
But… if he DOES exist… he ain’t some froo-froo… candy store god… running around sprinkling rose petals and pixie dust… and love, love, love… and delivering one of those fruity drinks with the pink umbrellas to my beach cabana while I lounge….

No. If God exists… he is an awesome… and awful… God….
And… I’d better think about that….
Get MY life straight.
Not judge others.
Forgive.
Love.

Even tough love.

What’s Missing in America…? An American Ultra-Conservative Right-Wing Fundamentalist Christian Rant… About Abortion… and Accountability… and Other Things Political….

Something has been bothering me recently… and today I’m going to address… THAT….

What’s missing in America…?

We ALL tend to blame someone else… and let our own choices slide….
Then… we complain about our “enemy’s” lack of accountability….

THAT… is HYPOCRISY….

What’s missing in America…?

1. We’ve lost our belief in the Sanctity of Human Life….

2. We’ve lost our ability to be civil towards those with whom we disagree….

I can only think of one word that describes both of those Virtues….

Love.

We’ve lost it.
I’ve lost it….
Because… accountability starts with ME!!!

America may CLAIM to be a Christian nation… but when even other Americans… even members of my own family… cannot see God’s Love shining through me… then my witness means nothing… good….

Right to Life does not mean Right to Brutalize Others for believing differently than I do….
God’s People honor God by following God’s Commandments… not inflicting our beliefs on others….
Not through imposing our will on others through the political process….

How can I say that…?

Check this out:
Matthew 22:15-22 King James Version (KJV)

15 Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk.
16 And they sent out unto him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man: for thou regardest not the person of men.
17 Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not?
18 But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites?
19 Shew me the tribute money. And they brought unto him a penny.
20 And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription?
21 They say unto him, Caesar’s. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s.
22 When they had heard these words, they marvelled, and left him, and went their way.

Must be kind of an important concept… because the Holy Spirit made sure it was written down twice….
Mark 12:17 English Standard Version (ESV)

17 Jesus said to them, “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” And they marveled at him.

In context… Jews… and even Roman Citizens… did not vote during the Roman Empire… so Jesus was not speaking about voting….
He was talking about paying taxes….
He was talking about God’s Sovereignty… of the most powerful man on Earth… the Emperor of Rome….
Jesus was defusing talk of rebellion… against an unjust government… because God is Sovereign….

Read Paul’s writing… if you think I am off track….

Now… the Bible doesn’t say anything about abortion….
Or… does it…?
Deuteronomy 22:6-7 English Standard Version (ESV)

6 “If you come across a bird’s nest in any tree or on the ground, with young ones or eggs and the mother sitting on the young or on the eggs, you shall not take the mother with the young. 7 You shall let the mother go, but the young you may take for yourself, that it may go well with you, and that you may live long.

Two things:
1. This is a commandment….
2. This commandment is important enough that it comes with a promise… just like the commandment to honor your father and your mother….

Ok….
WHY???

As far as I can see in Scripture… God’s Will is defined primarily by Glorifying himself… and secondarily via the Salvation of man….

The chick…. The egg…. The fetus…. The baby…. Has not reached the Age of Accountability… so even though Original Sin and being Born in Sin applies… Accountability does not….

Accountability DOES apply to the mother….
She will be judged….
But… not by me….
God says judgment is his… not mine… and that by judging others… I am usurping God’s Authority… and attempting to place myself in a position of superiority over God….
And… THAT… ain’t gonna work….

This is a rather long passage of Scripture… but look at the flow… and reflect on God’s Sovereignty….
Matthew 7 English Standard Version (ESV)

Judging Others

7 “Judge not, that you be not judged. 2 For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. 3 Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.

6 “Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them underfoot and turn to attack you.
Ask, and It Will Be Given

7 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. 9 Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? 11 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!

The Golden Rule

12 “So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.

13 “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy[a] that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. 14 For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.

A Tree and Its Fruit

15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. 16 You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. 18 A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus you will recognize them by their fruits.
I Never Knew You

21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’
Build Your House on the Rock

24 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”

The Authority of Jesus

28 And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, 29 for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.

Footnotes:
[a] Matthew 7:13 Some manuscripts For the way is wide and easy

I do not… cannot… know the mind of God….
How then… can I stand in Judgment of others…?
I am unworthy myself….

I am not suggesting Abortion is a good thing. Not at ALL….
But….
Romans 6:22-23 English Standard Version (ESV)

22 But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

We have ALL sinned. The wages of sin is Death. Separation from God. Eternally….
We have ALL earned Death….
God judges. And… God chooses whom HE chooses….

I am also not suggesting that Christians should not participate in the political process….

I am simply suggesting that Christians… not allow ourselves to be led astray by false prophets… who seek political power for themselves… by preaching a message of hate… rather than a Gospel of Love….

Check your political beliefs… against Scripture….

You are free to vote your conscience….
However….
Galatians 5:12-14 English Standard Version (ESV)

12 I wish those who unsettle you would emasculate themselves!

13 For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. 14 For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

Read that again. Understand it. Resist those… even those within the Church… who unsettle you… and stir you up….
Act in LOVE towards your neighbor….
Because THAT is your witness….
Because THAT is my witness….

THAT… is what I will be held accountable for….

As a Christian… I should hold MYSELF to a higher standard….
And… not judge others….
But… forgive… as I am forgiven….

Human life is Sacred.
America has lost our belief in the sanctity of Life… because we have lost our appreciation of God’s Love….

I do not believe that American Christians can Glorify God via a message of hate….
Neither can we Glorify God through usurping God’ Authority… and pushing a message of cheap Grace… and lack of personal accountability based solely on Scripture… not the evolution of man towards godhood….

Choosing the correct path towards Glorify God requires American Christians to be shrewd….
Many will be misled….
Many will fall away….
In the End… God will only save his Remnant….

And… that Remnant… will be defined… through our witness… via our Love….
In the End… Faith… Hope… and Love… will abide….

Being a great orator… while spewing hate… doesn’t get it….

1 Corinthians 13 English Standard Version (ESV)

The Way of Love

13 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3 If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned,[a] but have not love, I gain nothing.

4 Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant 5 or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful;[b] 6 it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. 7 Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

8 Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. 11 When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. 12 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.

13 So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

Ungodly Anger… Directed Towards God… Death… and Thanksgiving….: jonah 4.

Jonah 4 English Standard Version (ESV)
Jonah’s Anger and the Lord’s Compassion

4 But it displeased Jonah exceedingly,[a] and he was angry. 2 And he prayed to the Lord and said, “O Lord, is not this what I said when I was yet in my country? That is why I made haste to flee to Tarshish; for I knew that you are a gracious God and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and relenting from disaster. 3 Therefore now, O Lord, please take my life from me, for it is better for me to die than to live.” 4 And the Lord said, “Do you do well to be angry?”

5 Jonah went out of the city and sat to the east of the city and made a booth for himself there. He sat under it in the shade, till he should see what would become of the city. 6 Now the Lord God appointed a plant[b] and made it come up over Jonah, that it might be a shade over his head, to save him from his discomfort.[c] So Jonah was exceedingly glad because of the plant. 7 But when dawn came up the next day, God appointed a worm that attacked the plant, so that it withered. 8 When the sun rose, God appointed a scorching east wind, and the sun beat down on the head of Jonah so that he was faint. And he asked that he might die and said, “It is better for me to die than to live.” 9 But God said to Jonah, “Do you do well to be angry for the plant?” And he said, “Yes, I do well to be angry, angry enough to die.” 10 And the Lord said, “You pity the plant, for which you did not labor, nor did you make it grow, which came into being in a night and perished in a night. 11 And should not I pity Nineveh, that great city, in which there are more than 120,000 persons who do not know their right hand from their left, and also much cattle?”

Footnotes:

Can a Christian be angry at God…?
For something as petty as not getting what they want…?

Obviously… that answer is YES!!!

What is God’s response…?

God is steadfast in his Love….

Jonah acknowledges that… but STILL doesn’t GET it….

Jonah was so mad that he wanted God to take his life….

Jonah CLEARLY was not acting in Love.
Jonah was pitiful.
Jonah felt pity for himself.
Jonah even felt pity for the castor bean plant.
But he felt NO pity for the city of Nineveh… nor the 120,000 inhabitants… not counting women and children….

In perspective… Israel was the largest it had ever been at this time… and probably had around 250,000 men, women and children…. Pretty close the same number population….

In contrast… God was concerned about not on the men… the women… and the children… but also the cattle….

God demonstrated not only his dominion over ALL of his Creation… weather… water… giant fish… prophets… priests… kings… the Sun… the wind… castor bean plants… and even lowly worms….
But God also expresses his Love for ALL his Creation…. ALL life… is sacred….

Still… ALL things were Created by God to Glorify him… and only reach their ultimate purpose in their creation when they achieve that purpose….

ALL life is sacred… but life serves a defined purpose…. To Glorify God….

God is Lord over Death…. Because even Death… serves a purpose….

Death is appointed a time… in order to be subjugated to its purpose… which is also to Glorify God….

Jonah asked for God to take his life… but their is no Scriptural evidence that God fulfilled Jonah’s desire… because God seemed to still have plans for Jonah….

Again… Jonah reminds me of Job….
Job also asked God to take his life in Job 3…. But… God did not…. Because God was teaching Job…. And God had other plans….

Life is sacred to God. And… God is Sovereign…. God withheld Job’s life from Satan….

While I’m talking about Death… I’m going to throw out another passage… that I found during a VERY dark time in my life….
I was seriously contemplating how God can be Glorified… when Christians divorce….
God hates divorce…. Divorce is violence….
God states repeatedly that his purpose in Marriage… or Christian Marriage… is to raise up Godly Offspring….

In the midst of THAT… someone I HIGHLY respected… an advocate in the other camp… was dying….
And… I wondered… WHY???

I was angry… like Jonah… and I could not understand WHY God allowed… why God appointed… the events… and the people….

And then… I found… THIS:

Isaiah 57:1-2 English Standard Version (ESV)
Israel’s Futile Idolatry

57 The righteous man perishes,
and no one lays it to heart;
devout men are taken away,
while no one understands.
For the righteous man is taken away from calamity;
2 he enters into peace;
they rest in their beds
who walk in their uprightness.

Sometimes… God removes his Chosen from the fray… as a reward….
When their work is done….
When his Will is accomplished….

God is Sovereign….
God chastens his children….
But he doesn’t necessarily chase everyone….
Sometimes… God leaves people to their own devices….
To suffer the effects of their choices….
To allow their choices to chastise their flesh….
And… God removes his children from the difficult situation….

God prepares us for the battle he puts before us….

God does not promise any of us happiness….

Now… I’m going to backtrack a second….

Jonah was livid that God used him to deliver Salvation to the Assyrians….
Just imagine how some of us would feel if God sent some of the Mississippi National Guard over to the Middle East… and all of a sudden… because of their witness… ALL of ISIS… and ALL of Iran… were saved….

A WHOLE lot of people would be angry….
Would doubt their conversion….
Would be upset about some of their beliefs and practices….
And would not themselves be swayed….

While Nineveh… that GREAT city… followed God… Israel… God’s Chosen People… continued to backslide….
While those Sinners in Nineveh served the only TRUE God… and treated EVERYONE fairly… Justly… Israel continued to try to worship God… and Mammon… or money… and cheat and rob… their fellow man… and their God…. Steal…. Kill…. Divorce for no reason…. Defile themselves…. And… sit in their usual church pews… spewing their usual hate of those who they view as not being like themselves…. Not good enough….

While Joonah was hating… God was LOVING….
And BLESSING….

And… while Jonah was so busy being angry… he was too busy… with his own STUFF… to appreciate God’s BLESSINGS….

Be Thankful for how God has blessed you.
Appreciate how God has blessed others.
ALL life is sacred to God.
God is Sovereign.
Praise God!

Historical and Social Context… and… Jonah 3….

First off… some of my comments on Jonah 3 may have offended some people….

If you were not offended… you probably should re-read it….
You probably missed something if you were not offended….

Now… how can I categorically say that mankind does not have the right to happiness…?
Must be because I am one of those Puritanical… Right-Wing… Conservative… Holier-than-thou type… typical… no-fun… fundamentally mentally challenged… Fundamentalist… Scriptural Literalistic… who are the bane of the world… because we just can’t leave other people alone to their own devices… and their vices….

Nope. Not at all.
I believe the mandates and commandments of Scripture only apply to Christians… and are only valid if I choose to accept them… out of Love for God….

I say that no one has a right to happiness based on my understanding of Philosophy. Or Psychology. Of the Pleasure Principle….
Because the Pleasure Principle was never meant to wander free… and unchecked…. Not even Ayn Rand’s Objectivism suggests that….
Because… the blatant whims and fancies of the Pleasure Principle… must ALWAYS be constrained by the Reality Principle… if mankind is to exist in any form of Society….

And… the suggestion that everyone is ENTITLED to happiness… even at the expense of others… is a blatant abrogation of that foundational principle… and dooms the entire enterprise to abject failure….
Even here on Earth….

So… the suggestion that we all have the right to happiness… is an unmitigated and spurious fantasy….

Now… for the historical and social context… of Jonah….

I suppose that first I should acknowledge that several ways to view/interpret/understand/accept Jonah have been proposed….
Jonah is:
1. an allegory- symbolic fiction made up to teach principles or truths,
2. a midrash- a classic Jewish commentary of Scripture from the first 1,000 years of Judaism,
3. a parable- a brief, usually fictional story used to convey moral, religious or spiritual truths, or
4. a historical and/or prophetic narrative.
Many… or most… Old Testament scholars put Jonah somewhere in the first three….

I am a Scriptural Literalist… so I don’t think even #4 goes far enough….
Calling Jonah Historical… does not do God’s Word justice…. And does not give God the Glory he deserves….

The events depicted in Jonah probably occurred in the 8th Century Before Christ. The book was written sometime after that. Jeroboam II (son of Jehoash or Joash) was the King of Israel. He was a great warrior king who extended the realm of Israel to the borders present during King Solomon’s reign. Israel was the most prosperous… and the most prestigious… it had ever been during the reign of King Jeroboam, son of Jehoash….

So… Israel during the time of Jonah… was just like America today….
JUST like America today….
Israel had NEVER been so rich….
They were major players in international trade… and that was what generated their wealth….
They sat between Egypt and Assyria… and made themselves rich off of the trade with both….
And… King Jeroboam II expanded their borders… influence… and wealth….
God truly blessed Israel.

Jonah wasn’t the only Prophet during Jeroboam II’s reign.
Hosea, Joel and Amos were also active during Jeroboam II’s reign.
Amos describes a great earthquake that has been evidenced in the archeological record at the time:
Amos 1:1 English Standard Version (ESV)

1 The words of Amos, who was among the shepherds[a] of Tekoa, which he saw concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel, two years[b] before the earthquake.
Footnotes:

[a] Amos 1:1 Or sheep breeders
[b] Amos 1:1 Or during two years

What do we know of Jeroboam II…?

2 Kings 14:23-29 English Standard Version (ESV)
Jeroboam II Reigns in Israel

23 In the fifteenth year of Amaziah the son of Joash, king of Judah, Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel, began to reign in Samaria, and he reigned forty-one years. 24 And he did what was evil in the sight of the Lord. He did not depart from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which he made Israel to sin. 25 He restored the border of Israel from Lebo-hamath as far as the Sea of the Arabah, according to the word of the Lord, the God of Israel, which he spoke by his servant Jonah the son of Amittai, the prophet, who was from Gath-hepher. 26 For the Lord saw that the affliction of Israel was very bitter, for there was none left, bond or free, and there was none to help Israel. 27 But the Lord had not said that he would blot out the name of Israel from under heaven, so he saved them by the hand of Jeroboam the son of Joash.

28 Now the rest of the acts of Jeroboam and all that he did, and his might, how he fought, and how he restored Damascus and Hamath to Judah in Israel, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel? 29 And Jeroboam slept with his fathers, the kings of Israel, and Zechariah his son reigned in his place.

God used King Jeroboam II to save Israel… even though NONE of the kings submitted to God particularly well….
God was not pleased….
Yet… Israel prospered….

Traditionally… Israel has three offices….
Prophet. Priest. And King. All three are united in Jesus as the heir to the priesthood of Melchizedek, but during the Kingdom of Israel, the offices were separate.
So… obviously… the Prophets and the Priests must have been doing their jobs reasonably well to warrant God’s rich blessings on his people….

Micah came slightly later and had this to say:
Micah 2:11 English Standard Version (ESV)
11 If a man should go about and utter wind and lies,
saying, “I will preach to you of wine and strong drink,”
he would be the preacher for this people!

So… maybe not….

What was God’s complaint about Jeroboam II… and the kings… and priests… and prophets… ALL of the leaders of Israel… before and after…?

Micah 2:1-10 English Standard Version (ESV)
Woe to the Oppressors

2 Woe to those who devise wickedness
and work evil on their beds!
When the morning dawns, they perform it,
because it is in the power of their hand.
2 They covet fields and seize them,
and houses, and take them away;
they oppress a man and his house,
a man and his inheritance.
3 Therefore thus says the Lord:
behold, against this family I am devising disaster,[a]
from which you cannot remove your necks,
and you shall not walk haughtily,
for it will be a time of disaster.
4 In that day they shall take up a taunt song against you
and moan bitterly,
and say, “We are utterly ruined;
he changes the portion of my people;
how he removes it from me!
To an apostate he allots our fields.”
5 Therefore you will have none to cast the line by lot
in the assembly of the Lord.

6 “Do not preach”—thus they preach—
“one should not preach of such things;
disgrace will not overtake us.”
7 Should this be said, O house of Jacob?
Has the Lord grown impatient?[b]
Are these his deeds?
Do not my words do good
to him who walks uprightly?
8 But lately my people have risen up as an enemy;
you strip the rich robe from those who pass by trustingly
with no thought of war.[c]
9 The women of my people you drive out
from their delightful houses;
from their young children you take away
my splendor forever.
10 Arise and go,
for this is no place to rest,
because of uncleanness that destroys
with a grievous destruction.

The greedy and the political and religious classes conspired to strip the land… and thus the wealth and prosperity… from the Middle Class…. Land ownership was strictly prescribed in the Mosaic Law. And is closely tied to redemption… as in the story of Ruth… and Boaz… and is the basis of this passage from Malachi… about divorce being violence….

Malachi 2:15-17 English Standard Version (ESV)

15 Did he not make them one, with a portion of the Spirit in their union?[a] And what was the one God[b] seeking?[c] Godly offspring. So guard yourselves[d] in your spirit, and let none of you be faithless to the wife of your youth. 16 “For the man who does not love his wife but divorces her,[e] says the Lord, the God of Israel, covers[f] his garment with violence, says the Lord of hosts. So guard yourselves in your spirit, and do not be faithless.”
The Messenger of the Lord

17 You have wearied the Lord with your words. But you say, “How have we wearied him?” By saying, “Everyone who does evil is good in the sight of the Lord, and he delights in them.” Or by asking, “Where is the God of justice?”

Laws Concerning Divorce

24 “When a man takes a wife and marries her, if then she finds no favor in his eyes because he has found some indecency in her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out of his house, and she departs out of his house, 2 and if she goes and becomes another man’s wife, 3 and the latter man hates her and writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out of his house, or if the latter man dies, who took her to be his wife, 4 then her former husband, who sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife, after she has been defiled, for that is an abomination before the Lord. And you shall not bring sin upon the land that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance.

For instance:
Judges 11:23-25 English Standard Version (ESV)

23 So then the Lord, the God of Israel, dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel; and are you to take possession of them? 24 Will you not possess what Chemosh your god gives you to possess? And all that the Lord our God has dispossessed before us, we will possess. 25 Now are you any better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever contend against Israel, or did he ever go to war with them?

The Amorites sacrificed the children of their priest-kings to Chemosh in return for power….

But… how did Israel respond…?

1 Kings 11:1-13 English Standard Version (ESV)
Solomon Turns from the Lord

11 Now King Solomon loved many foreign women, along with the daughter of Pharaoh: Moabite, Ammonite, Edomite, Sidonian, and Hittite women, 2 from the nations concerning which the Lord had said to the people of Israel, “You shall not enter into marriage with them, neither shall they with you, for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods.” Solomon clung to these in love. 3 He had 700 wives, who were princesses, and 300 concubines. And his wives turned away his heart. 4 For when Solomon was old his wives turned away his heart after other gods, and his heart was not wholly true to the Lord his God, as was the heart of David his father. 5 For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites. 6 So Solomon did what was evil in the sight of the Lord and did not wholly follow the Lord, as David his father had done. 7 Then Solomon built a high place for Chemosh the abomination of Moab, and for Molech the abomination of the Ammonites, on the mountain east of Jerusalem. 8 And so he did for all his foreign wives, who made offerings and sacrificed to their gods.

The Lord Raises Adversaries

9 And the Lord was angry with Solomon, because his heart had turned away from the Lord, the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice 10 and had commanded him concerning this thing, that he should not go after other gods. But he did not keep what the Lord commanded. 11 Therefore the Lord said to Solomon, “Since this has been your practice and you have not kept my covenant and my statutes that I have commanded you, I will surely tear the kingdom from you and will give it to your servant. 12 Yet for the sake of David your father I will not do it in your days, but I will tear it out of the hand of your son. 13 However, I will not tear away all the kingdom, but I will give one tribe to your son, for the sake of David my servant and for the sake of Jerusalem that I have chosen.”

I’m going to go out on a limb and suggest that verse 13 just might be Messianic….

And… the rest of the story….

1 Kings 11:26-43 English Standard Version (ESV)

26 Jeroboam the son of Nebat, an Ephraimite of Zeredah, a servant of Solomon, whose mother’s name was Zeruah, a widow, also lifted up his hand against the king. 27 And this was the reason why he lifted up his hand against the king. Solomon built the Millo, and closed up the breach of the city of David his father. 28 The man Jeroboam was very able, and when Solomon saw that the young man was industrious he gave him charge over all the forced labor of the house of Joseph. 29 And at that time, when Jeroboam went out of Jerusalem, the prophet Ahijah the Shilonite found him on the road. Now Ahijah had dressed himself in a new garment, and the two of them were alone in the open country. 30 Then Ahijah laid hold of the new garment that was on him, and tore it into twelve pieces. 31 And he said to Jeroboam, “Take for yourself ten pieces, for thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘Behold, I am about to tear the kingdom from the hand of Solomon and will give you ten tribes 32 (but he shall have one tribe, for the sake of my servant David and for the sake of Jerusalem, the city that I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel), 33 because they have[a] forsaken me and worshiped Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, Chemosh the god of Moab, and Milcom the god of the Ammonites, and they have not walked in my ways, doing what is right in my sight and keeping my statutes and my rules, as David his father did. 34 Nevertheless, I will not take the whole kingdom out of his hand, but I will make him ruler all the days of his life, for the sake of David my servant whom I chose, who kept my commandments and my statutes. 35 But I will take the kingdom out of his son’s hand and will give it to you, ten tribes. 36 Yet to his son I will give one tribe, that David my servant may always have a lamp before me in Jerusalem, the city where I have chosen to put my name. 37 And I will take you, and you shall reign over all that your soul desires, and you shall be king over Israel. 38 And if you will listen to all that I command you, and will walk in my ways, and do what is right in my eyes by keeping my statutes and my commandments, as David my servant did, I will be with you and will build you a sure house, as I built for David, and I will give Israel to you. 39 And I will afflict the offspring of David because of this, but not forever.’” 40 Solomon sought therefore to kill Jeroboam. But Jeroboam arose and fled into Egypt, to Shishak king of Egypt, and was in Egypt until the death of Solomon.

41 Now the rest of the acts of Solomon, and all that he did, and his wisdom, are they not written in the Book of the Acts of Solomon? 42 And the time that Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel was forty years. 43 And Solomon slept with his fathers and was buried in the city of David his father. And Rehoboam his son reigned in his place.

Israel had never been so rich… and their response to God’s blessing… was to turn away from God… and embrace splendor… trust wealth… and relentlessly pursue their own happiness… through pleasure….

So… the issues with Israel… not Assyria… at the time of Jonah… were:
1. Oppression of the Middle Class (and poor and women) by the wealthy and privileged political and religious classes… through theft and usurpation of means of producing wealth (the main drivers of the economy were sale olives and wine… and possibly horses… to Egypt… but predominantly to Assyria…. And by men who became displeased with their wives… and wives who became displeased with their husbands….
2. Syncretism…. Even the places where God was worshiped… such as Beth-el (House of God) and Dan… God was worshiped via a golden calf idol…. God was NOT worshiped as God… but as an amalgamation of God… and the ideas of man… incorporating foreign gods… foreign concepts… that were considered to enhance the worship of God….

Still God was patient… and Merciful… to Israel… even as Israel ran to other gods….

Here is just a taste of the wicked syncretism and social injustice practiced by the leaders of Israel….
1 Kings 21 English Standard Version (ESV)
Naboth’s Vineyard

21 Now Naboth the Jezreelite had a vineyard in Jezreel, beside the palace of Ahab king of Samaria. 2 And after this Ahab said to Naboth, “Give me your vineyard, that I may have it for a vegetable garden, because it is near my house, and I will give you a better vineyard for it; or, if it seems good to you, I will give you its value in money.” 3 But Naboth said to Ahab, “The Lord forbid that I should give you the inheritance of my fathers.” 4 And Ahab went into his house vexed and sullen because of what Naboth the Jezreelite had said to him, for he had said, “I will not give you the inheritance of my fathers.” And he lay down on his bed and turned away his face and would eat no food.

5 But Jezebel his wife came to him and said to him, “Why is your spirit so vexed that you eat no food?” 6 And he said to her, “Because I spoke to Naboth the Jezreelite and said to him, ‘Give me your vineyard for money, or else, if it please you, I will give you another vineyard for it.’ And he answered, ‘I will not give you my vineyard.’” 7 And Jezebel his wife said to him, “Do you now govern Israel? Arise and eat bread and let your heart be cheerful; I will give you the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite.”

8 So she wrote letters in Ahab’s name and sealed them with his seal, and she sent the letters to the elders and the leaders who lived with Naboth in his city. 9 And she wrote in the letters, “Proclaim a fast, and set Naboth at the head of the people. 10 And set two worthless men opposite him, and let them bring a charge against him, saying, ‘You have cursed[a] God and the king.’ Then take him out and stone him to death.” 11 And the men of his city, the elders and the leaders who lived in his city, did as Jezebel had sent word to them. As it was written in the letters that she had sent to them, 12 they proclaimed a fast and set Naboth at the head of the people. 13 And the two worthless men came in and sat opposite him. And the worthless men brought a charge against Naboth in the presence of the people, saying, “Naboth cursed God and the king.” So they took him outside the city and stoned him to death with stones. 14 Then they sent to Jezebel, saying, “Naboth has been stoned; he is dead.”

15 As soon as Jezebel heard that Naboth had been stoned and was dead, Jezebel said to Ahab, “Arise, take possession of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, which he refused to give you for money, for Naboth is not alive, but dead.” 16 And as soon as Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, Ahab arose to go down to the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, to take possession of it.
The Lord Condemns Ahab

17 Then the word of the Lord came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying, 18 “Arise, go down to meet Ahab king of Israel, who is in Samaria; behold, he is in the vineyard of Naboth, where he has gone to take possession. 19 And you shall say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord, “Have you killed and also taken possession?”’ And you shall say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord: “In the place where dogs licked up the blood of Naboth shall dogs lick your own blood.”’”

20 Ahab said to Elijah, “Have you found me, O my enemy?” He answered, “I have found you, because you have sold yourself to do what is evil in the sight of the Lord. 21 Behold, I will bring disaster upon you. I will utterly burn you up, and will cut off from Ahab every male, bond or free, in Israel. 22 And I will make your house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah, for the anger to which you have provoked me, and because you have made Israel to sin. 23 And of Jezebel the Lord also said, ‘The dogs shall eat Jezebel within the walls of Jezreel.’ 24 Anyone belonging to Ahab who dies in the city the dogs shall eat, and anyone of his who dies in the open country the birds of the heavens shall eat.”
Ahab’s Repentance

25 (There was none who sold himself to do what was evil in the sight of the Lord like Ahab, whom Jezebel his wife incited. 26 He acted very abominably in going after idols, as the Amorites had done, whom the Lord cast out before the people of Israel.)

27 And when Ahab heard those words, he tore his clothes and put sackcloth on his flesh and fasted and lay in sackcloth and went about dejectedly. 28 And the word of the Lord came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying, 29 “Have you seen how Ahab has humbled himself before me? Because he has humbled himself before me, I will not bring the disaster in his days; but in his son’s days I will bring the disaster upon his house.”

God takes Social Justice within his Covenant Community… and appropriate worship… seriously….

So… why did God tolerate Israel’s dalliances…?
Because he is jealous for his name… and his Glory….

But… eventually… God raised the evil Assyrians up… to punish… and to utterly destroy… his Chosen Children… Israel….
After he redeemed and sanctified them through the reluctant witness of his Prophet Jonah….

God will not be mocked….
And… he saves for himself only a Remnant….
God is not impressed with numbers….
God only cares about submission….
Because submission is required for Salvation… and is the only demonstration of our love….

Probably a good time to go back and look at Jonah 3….
To help us appreciate the Historical and Social Context… that Jonah missed….
God is Merciful… but even God’s Mercy… cannot be dissociated from his Justness and Holiness….

Jonah 3 English Standard Version (ESV)
Jonah Goes to Nineveh

3 Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time, saying, 2 “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it the message that I tell you.” 3 So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city,[a] three days’ journey in breadth.[b] 4 Jonah began to go into the city, going a day’s journey. And he called out, “Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!” 5 And the people of Nineveh believed God. They called for a fast and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them to the least of them.
The People of Nineveh Repent

6 The word reached[c] the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, removed his robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. 7 And he issued a proclamation and published through Nineveh, “By the decree of the king and his nobles: Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste anything. Let them not feed or drink water, 8 but let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and let them call out mightily to God. Let everyone turn from his evil way and from the violence that is in his hands. 9 Who knows? God may turn and relent and turn from his fierce anger, so that we may not perish.”

10 When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil way, God relented of the disaster that he had said he would do to them, and he did not do it.

Great Expectations: Jonah 3.

I know of two recent sermon series on Jonah….
These comments are completely unrelated to either of those….

These are simply comments….
Nothing deeper than that.

First… an aside….

I went to my daughter’s high school graduation yesterday….
Her principle got up and proclaimed that every person in the Lexington High School Class of 2015 had the right to happiness….
Ostensibly… because every person in the world… has the God-given right to happiness….

Of course… Lexington is one the most ardently Liberal towns in the amazingly Liberal State… or Commonwealth… of Massachusetts… so God was never mentioned….
However… the same message… is proclaimed from the pulpit of the largest church in Lexington, Massachusetts… as the Word of God….
And… it’s not….
Not the Word of God….
Not Scripture….
Not even the truth….

It’s a lie….
A blatant lie.

It’s a political expediency….
A fantasy… spoken to lead people astray….
Liberal Progressivism….
Populism….
Social Justice Ministry….
Prosperity Gospel….
Redemptive Movement Hermeneutics….
All peddle the same lie….
Recycle the same misleading message….
“You deserve happiness….”
“You are ENTITLED to happiness….”
“God wants you to be happy….”

The United States Constitution guarantees American Citizens the legal Right to Life, Liberty and the PURSUIT of Happiness… within certain legal constraints… as part of the Natural Laws that should apply to all Free Men….

Scripture makes NO such statement….

God shows no inclination to take man’s happiness into consideration overtly….

While God is interested in Social Justice… as a testimony to his Justice and Mercy… a witness for his Chosen People… to the unsaved… God does not guarantee… does not promise… happiness….
Scripture talks about Joy… during duress…. As a result of Faith…. Never happiness….

So… where does this belief… that man is entitled to happiness… from God… come from… if not from Scripture….
From man….
From the Materialists….
From Hegel….
From Nietzsche….
From Freud….
From Epicurus….
From the Hedonists….
From the Free Thinkers… and the brilliant and avowed atheist Bertrand Russell… and his mentor… Alfred North Whitehead… who injected a liberal dose into Liberal Theology….
From Dallas Willard….
From any number of Liberal Preachers… who do not wish to be constrained by God’s Commandments… but only wish to discuss… to expound… God’s Love… not accepting… or acknowledging… that the two are inseparably intertwined….

Does that mean God wants Christians… or even non-Christians… to be unhappy…? To be grumpy…? To be miserable…?
NO!!!
But God’s interest is in our Salvation… not Social Justice….

God intends for Christians to find Joy in our suffering… as he increases our Faith… through the ministry of the Holy Spirit… not mortal men and women….

But… maybe I’m wrong….
Maybe they’re right….
Maybe God is happy to accept… anything….
Maybe God is… evolving….
Maybe man is evolving… to be gods….
Maybe the Pleasure Principle… and happiness… is the overarching principle of the Universe….

Maybe….

I don’t believe that….

But… I’m one of those ignorant Bible-thumpin’ Fundamentalist Scriptural Literalists you hear all of the scorn being hurled towards these days….

And… the only question that any of you should be asking is… do I have any Scripture that just might be pertinent on the topic of how to effectively preach God’s Word…?

Maybe….

But… it ain’t my Scripture….
And… I should do my best to just stand out of its way… and let God’s Word speak….

But first… a few questions… to ponder… while you read….

Does a preacher in our Modern Age have to tone down the Hell-fire and Brimstone to effectively reach today’s “seekers”…?
To make Christianity more palatable…?
Should preachers fear turning off people who might not wish to have their life-style challenged…?

Does the preacher’s style even matter…?
If so… how much…?

Let me set the scene for you: Jonah… HATES… Ninevah….
Jonah HATES the Assyrians….
The Assyrians are the absolute worst of the worst. The most evil nation on Earth. They are enemies of the Jews and their nation. They conquered… and destroyed… Israel….

Jonah is laying on the Hell-fire and Brimstone pretty thick… and… he MEANS it! He thinks he is heaping condemnation on the heads of his hated enemy….

I can just see Jonah wagging his tongue with his thumbs stuck to the side of head wiggling his fingers at those Ninevites… yelling “Nah-nah nah-nah nah nah! God’s gonna GET you!”

Jonah wants his enemies D-E-A-D Dead….
In the Spiriritual sense….
In the literal sense….
In the most graphic terms imaginable….

Jonah EXPECTS God to completely and utterly destroy his enemy… and the enemy of his people… of God’s people….
And… in his mind… the enemies of God….

Jonah has Great Expectations….
Jonah KNOWS what’s about to happen….
Or… thinks he does….
Jonah thinks he knows what to expect from God… because he thinks he understands just how Holy… just how Just… God is….
Because God has just chastened… and chastized… Jonah….
Jonah just had a mountaintop experience… in the very depths of Sheol….
And… still… he has no clue about who God is….
His understanding of God… is too constricted….
Too limited by his own desires….
His own emotional vulnerabilities….
Jonah demands that God do HIS will….
And… God doesn’t work like that….

But… still… Jonah preached the Word of God….

Jonah 3:5-10 English Standard Version (ESV)

5 And the people of Nineveh believed God. They called for a fast and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them to the least of them.

Ok. What just happened…?

Jonah just delivered one of the meanest… most virulent… most hate-filled sermons probably ever delivered on the face of the Earth… to someone of a completely different ethnicity and culture… to absolute HEATHENS… and they ALL REPENT!!!

These are not God’s People….
These are God’s ENEMIES!!!

And… they pray for Salvation….
They fast….
They sit in ashes and rend their garments….
They act… guilty… towards their Sin….

The Ninevites… the Great Evil… REPENT!!!
But… Jonah never even hinted Salvation was EVEN POSSIBLE for them!
All they ever heard was condemnation of their Sin….
And yet… they were convicted… and repented….

Was that because Jonah was such an eloquent preacher…? I think not.
Was that because Jonah proclaimed God’s Love…? Absolutely not.

So… what happened…?
What does this conversion demonstrate…?

God’s Sovereignty….
God chooses whom he chooses….

Romans 9:15-18 English Standard Version (ESV)

15 For he says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.” 16 So then it depends not on human will or exertion,[a] but on God, who has mercy. 17 For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, “For this very purpose I have raised you up, that I might show my power in you, and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.” 18 So then he has mercy on whomever he wills, and he hardens whomever he wills.

Footnotes:
[a] Romans 9:16 Greek not of him who wills or runs

But… then… how can God damn someone to Hell… if he hardens their heart by his own Will….

Is it because God has foreknowledge…? Because God foreordains…?
No.

Then why…?
Because God is good….
Because God is PERFECT… in ways that the human mind cannot fathom….

But… the REAL answer… is because God is Sovereign….
Which is just another way of saying… because God… is God….

Jonah didn’t get THAT….

I struggle with understanding… accepting… embracing… God….

I feel I need to inject some social… historical… context….
But… I don’t want that to distract from what I’ve just said….
So… I’ll take a break here….
To… ponder….

Impressionistic Interpretation of Jonah 2.

In the depths of despair… Jonah finally prayed… and recognized God’s Authority….

Jonah 2 English Standard Version (ESV)

Jonah’s Prayer

2 Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the belly of the fish, 2 saying,

“I called out to the Lord, out of my distress,
and he answered me;
out of the belly of Sheol I cried,
and you heard my voice.
3
For you cast me into the deep,
into the heart of the seas,
and the flood surrounded me;
all your waves and your billows
passed over me.
4
Then I said, ‘I am driven away
from your sight;
yet I shall again look
upon your holy temple.’
5
The waters closed in over me to take my life;
the deep surrounded me;
weeds were wrapped about my head
6
at the roots of the mountains.
I went down to the land
whose bars closed upon me forever;
yet you brought up my life from the pit,
O Lord my God.
7
When my life was fainting away,
I remembered the Lord,
and my prayer came to you,
into your holy temple.
8
Those who pay regard to vain idols
forsake their hope of steadfast love.
9
But I with the voice of thanksgiving
will sacrifice to you;
what I have vowed I will pay.
Salvation belongs to the Lord!”

10 And the Lord spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah out upon the dry land.

First… a warning….
Scripture should be interpreted via Exegesis… NEVER Endogesis….
Truth must be pulled out of Scripture….
TRUTH can NEVER be injected into Scripture….

So… what follows… should not… CANNOT… be considered Truth….
This is conjecture….
An impressionistic interpretation….

Jonah’s prayer reminds me of this passage:

Matthew 27:45-47 English Standard Version (ESV)
The Death of Jesus

45 Now from the sixth hour[a] there was darkness over all the land[b] until the ninth hour.[c] 46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” 47 And some of the bystanders, hearing it, said, “This man is calling Elijah.”

Why Have You Forsaken Me?
To the choirmaster: according to The Doe of the Dawn. A Psalm of David.

22 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning?

O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer,
and by night, but I find no rest.

Yet you are holy,

To you they cried and were rescued;
in you they trusted and were not put to shame.

But I am a worm and not a man,
scorned by mankind and despised by the people.
7
All who see me mock me;
they make mouths at me; they wag their heads;
8
“He trusts in the Lord; let him deliver him;
let him rescue him, for he delights in him!”

9
Yet you are he who took me from the womb;
you made me trust you at my mother’s breasts.
10
On you was I cast from my birth,
and from my mother’s womb you have been my God.
11
Be not far from me,
for trouble is near,
and there is none to help.

Also reminds me of several passages in Job.
And… Isaiah….

Isaiah 27:1 English Standard Version (ESV)
The Redemption of Israel

27 In that day the Lord with his hard and great and strong sword will punish Leviathan the fleeing serpent, Leviathan the twisting serpent, and he will slay the dragon that is in the sea.

And… THAT… reminds me… of Genesis….
The Fall….
Genesis 3:1-5 English Standard Version (ESV)
The Fall

3 Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made.

He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You[a] shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” 2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, 3 but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’” 4 But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

1 Corinthians 5:4-5 English Standard Version (ESV)
Sexual Immorality Defiles the Church

4 When you are assembled in the name of the Lord Jesus and my spirit is present, with the power of our Lord Jesus, 5 you are to deliver this man to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord.[a]

Deliver this man to Satan… for the destruction of the flesh….

Does that not sound like… this…?
Job 2 English Standard Version (ESV)
Satan Attacks Job’s Health

2 Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them to present himself before the Lord. 2 And the Lord said to Satan, “From where have you come?” Satan answered the Lord and said, “From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking up and down on it.” 3 And the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil? He still holds fast his integrity, although you incited me against him to destroy him without reason.” 4 Then Satan answered the Lord and said, “Skin for skin! All that a man has he will give for his life. 5 But stretch out your hand and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse you to your face.” 6 And the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, he is in your hand; only spare his life.”

7 So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord and struck Job with loathsome sores from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head. 8 And he took a piece of broken pottery with which to scrape himself while he sat in the ashes.

9 Then his wife said to him, “Do you still hold fast your integrity? Curse God and die.” 10 But he said to her, “You speak as one of the foolish women would speak. Shall we receive good from God, and shall we not receive evil?”[a] In all this Job did not sin with his lips.

Why was Job sitting in ashes…?

He was expressing remorse….
He was mourning….
That was how the Ancient Near-East expressed guilt… and repentance….

That was what Jonah was expressing….
A cry of remorse….
Jonah deserved Death….
Jonah KNEW he deserved Death…. Eternal separation from God….
But… Jonah’s prayer… is a Prayer of Thanksgiving….
For Salvation….

One more odd impression….
The Harrowing of Hell….
Jesus descending into Hell… and defeating Death….

I don’t know if that is true… or just an impressionistic interpretation….
But here is one of the main pieces of Scripture….
Psalm 16:7-11English Standard Version (ESV)

7
I bless the Lord who gives me counsel;
in the night also my heart instructs me.[a]
8
I have set the Lord always before me;
because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.

9
Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being[b] rejoices;
my flesh also dwells secure.
10
For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol,
or let your holy one see corruption.[c]

11
You make known to me the path of life;
in your presence there is fullness of joy;
at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

Do I have a point…?
If so… what is it…?

Sometimes… I feel separated from God….

Sometimes… that may by my own choice….
Because I seek separation….

Perhaps… sometimes… I may be separated in order to deal with my sins of the flesh….

But… even though I may FEEL separated….
May even BE separated….
I am NEVER forsaken by God….
Separation is for a period of time… for my good… out of God’s great love for me… if I am his child….
God chastises those whom he loves….
Painfully….
For our own good….
For our growth….
To develop our Faith….
For his greater Glory….

Thinking Outside the Box: Lessons from Jonah 1.

Heard a sermon on Jonah recently. Very good sermon, actually….

Jonah is a very short book. Packed with interesting passages….

Jonah… speaks to me….

Because… Jonah… is me….

Jonah 1 English Standard Version (ESV)
Jonah Flees the Presence of the Lord

1 Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, 2 “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it, for their evil[a] has come up before me.” 3 But Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish. So he paid the fare and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish, away from the presence of the Lord.

Many are called….
Some are chosen….
Few get it right….

If God needs ME… to bring about Social Justice… for HIM… then… from whence comes the power for MY Salvation…?
If God is IMPOTENT… and NEEDS… ME… then how can I trust that HE has the power… the means… to effect my Salvation…?
I cannot….

But… if God is EVERYTHING he claims to be… then I can run… and I can hide… but I can NEVER… escape… the only… omniscient… omnipresent… omnipotent… eternal… GOD….

No matter how hard I try….

The Old Testament is FULL of men who were called by God… to testify….
We recognize most as Prophets… or… Servants of God….
Most… submitted… humbly….
This one didn’t….
Neither did Pharaoh….
Neither did King Nebuchadnezzer….
Neither do I….

4 But the Lord hurled a great wind upon the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship threatened to break up. 5 Then the mariners were afraid, and each cried out to his god. And they hurled the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten it for them. But Jonah had gone down into the inner part of the ship and had lain down and was fast asleep. 6 So the captain came and said to him, “What do you mean, you sleeper? Arise, call out to your god! Perhaps the god will give a thought to us, that we may not perish.”
Jonah Is Thrown into the Sea

7 And they said to one another, “Come, let us cast lots, that we may know on whose account this evil has come upon us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah. 8 Then they said to him, “Tell us on whose account this evil has come upon us. What is your occupation? And where do you come from? What is your country? And of what people are you?” 9 And he said to them, “I am a Hebrew, and I fear the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.” 10 Then the men were exceedingly afraid and said to him, “What is this that you have done!” For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of the Lord, because he had told them.

11 Then they said to him, “What shall we do to you, that the sea may quiet down for us?” For the sea grew more and more tempestuous. 12 He said to them, “Pick me up and hurl me into the sea; then the sea will quiet down for you, for I know it is because of me that this great tempest has come upon you.” 13 Nevertheless, the men rowed hard[b] to get back to dry land, but they could not, for the sea grew more and more tempestuous against them. 14 Therefore they called out to the Lord, “O Lord, let us not perish for this man’s life, and lay not on us innocent blood, for you, O Lord, have done as it pleased you.” 15 So they picked up Jonah and hurled him into the sea, and the sea ceased from its raging. 16 Then the men feared the Lord exceedingly, and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows.

Jonah RAN!!!
Jonah hid….
Jonah slept….

But… Jonah STILL witnessed….
And… Jonah’s testimony still changed lives….
In VERY unexpected ways….
Because… when push came to shove… and Jonah had run out of options… he submitted… prayed… and Glorified God….
Or… Jonah submitted to being a conduit for God to Glorify himself….
Through Jonah’s recalcitrance… and tragedy… and other men’s terror….
Through God’s Agent Jonah… those men were saved… and God was Glorified….
Through God’s Agent Pharaoh… God’s Chosen People were saved… and God was Glorified….
God is Sovereign….
NO ONE… can escape God….

A Great Fish Swallows Jonah

17 [c] And the Lord appointed[d] a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

Seems verse 17 is kind of flotsam and jetsam….
Just like the cargo….
Just like Jonah….
Thrown overboard….
Just kind of thrown in….
But… it’s an important verse….
An important Prophesy….
An important… Sign….
Not only was Jonah appointed…. Called….
So was the fish….
Specifically created… to accomplish God’s Sovereign purpose….
Just like Jonah….
Just like me….
Just like you….
From before Creation….
I AM!!!
Mindful of you….
You have value….
You have a purpose….
A sovereign purpose….
An inescapable purpose….
To witness….
To Glorify God….
Whether you are saved… or not….
Even Lucifer serves God in that way….
God is Sovereign….

Now I’m going to follow the direction that Jonah 1:17 points… to the Prophesy….

Matthew 12:38-39 English Standard Version (ESV)
The Sign of Jonah

38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered him, saying, “Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you.” 39 But he answered them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.

Matthew 16:1-4 English Standard Version (ESV)
The Pharisees and Sadducees Demand Signs

16 And the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and to test him they asked him to show them a sign from heaven. 2 He answered them,[a] “When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’ 3 And in the morning, ‘It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. 4 An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.” So he left them and departed.

Footnotes:
Matthew 16:2 Some manuscripts omit the following words to the end of verse 3

Luke 11:29-30 English Standard Version (ESV)
The Sign of Jonah

29 When the crowds were increasing, he began to say, “This generation is an evil generation. It seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah. 30 For as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so will the Son of Man be to this generation.

Now… we ALL know what the Sign of Jonah is… don’t we….
Jesus was talking about his Crucifixion… and Death… to pay for my sin…. To defeat Death… for me….
And… his Resurrection… after three days… for MY Salvation….

But… is that ALL…?
ALL that there is… to the meaning… of the Sign of Jonah…?
Jonah was Prophet…. A reluctant prophet, but a prophet none-the-less….
Jonah was a man of God….
Jonah was God’s Witness… God’s Representative… God’s Ambassador… to Nineveh….
The most sinful city on Earth….

Jonah didn’t want to go….
Jonah didn’t want to witness….
Jonah didn’t want to represent God’s Mercy… to brazen… entrenched… sinners….

But… THAT… was EXACTLY… precisely… what God called him to do….

God didn’t call Jonah to go to his Temple… and worship with others God had chosen to be his own….
God didn’t call Jonah to Social Justice ministry…. If that was God’s plan… then Jonah would have been ECSTATIC….
Ninevah was the capital city… of the Assyrians… who DESTROYED Israel….
Slaughtered God’s Chosen People….

And… God… sent Jonah… to save… THEM!!!

THAT is Love….

Next point… and this is going to hurt some people’s feelings….
Jesus didn’t want to participate in my Salvation either….
Jesus was reluctant… to die… for me….
Jesus prayed that he wouldn’t have to….
That God would allow the cup… of MY sin… to pass from him….
But Jesus recognized God’s Sovereignty… and sacrificed himself… to Glorify God….

Is THAT the full extent of the meaning of the Sign of Jonah…?
No….
I don’t think so….
At least… not for me….

God is Sovereign….
Jonah rebelled… and still Glorified God… through submission….
Jesus submitted… reluctantly… and Glorified God… through his submission… his sacrifice… and my Salvation….

But… what about the rest… of the people….

The Religious Leaders… were the ones demanding a sign….
THEY were rebellious….
THEY were wicked….
And… THEY… were God’s representatives… to his own Chosen People….

THEY… are who I… claim to be….

The Chief Priest is the person who DEMANDED that Jesus Christ be crucified….
The Chief Priest… and the other religious leaders… are the ones who would not be mollified… be Justice…. Who refused to grant Mercy…. Who cried out for the murder of the innocent… Son of God….

The Chief Priest was the only one with authority to do so….
God granted him that authority….

Here is what he said:
John 11:49-52 English Standard Version (ESV)

49 But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all. 50 Nor do you understand that it is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish.” 51 He did not say this of his own accord, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, 52 and not for the nation only, but also to gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.

Did Caiaphas, the High Priest for that year, really know what he was saying…?
Probably not…. He was seeking an excuse to maintain his power…. Maintain HIS authority….
But… the Pharisees were considered to be the most religiously pure… the most godly… men of the generation…. And for a long time before….
THEY followed the Mosaic Law….

But… they did not follow God’s Law….

They did not love God….
They loved themselves….
They loved their positions….
Their authority….
THEIR religion….

Still… without Caiaphas’ proclamation….
Without Caiaphas’ decision….
Judas Iscariot would not have been bribed….
Judas Iscariot would not have been paid the price of a slave… for the purchase of Jesus’ life….
For the purchase of Jesus… the Christ’s… Death….

And… MY Salvation… would not have been accomplished….

God was NEVER seeking to establish merely a Social Justice Ministry on Earth….
God was seeking MY Salvation….
God was seeking to establish HIS Kingdom on Earth….

Mission accomplished….
Because God is Sovereign….
God does what God chooses….
And… THAT… is ALWAYS… and in all ways… GOOD!!!

Whether I submit to God… or choose to rebel….
Where I am saved… or damned….
I WILL Glorify God….
Because God is Sovereign….

Hypothetical Question on the Power of Jesus Christ to Save….

Let me propose a hypothetical…. Or ask a hard question…. If God does not lose ANY of his true Children… then what about those who came to Christ at the Altar Call of this false prophet… who clearly was never a Christian? Now… he… and his denomination might tell you that Christians can fall from Grace. I don’t believe that. Because I don’t believe God can make mistakes. If he can, then I might not be saved. Or might not stay saved…. Anyone who walked down that aisle… and accepted Christ… and was Saved… and was Baptized… and took Communion… and heaped condemnation on his own head unwittingly if he were not really and truly saved… might just have a reason to question his own Salvation. Especially if he is being told that he can Fall Out of Faith…. But… that can’t really happen…. How do I know beyond any shadow of any doubt? Easy as children’s church song…. Because the Bible tells me so. If God used Pharaoh to save his Children when they were slaves in Egypt… then God can use false prophets to save his Children now in America and the rest of the world. God saves. Not pastors. Not churches. Nothing but the Precious Blood of Jesus saves. Period. God’s Calling is irresistible to his Chosen. Jesus’ Blood cannot fail to save. Of course… that’s just MY opinion….

And… MY opinion may be flawed….

My thoughts and opinions are definitely considered WAY out there in many mega-churches and so-called Christian seminaries. My thoughts and opinions are definitely not for commercial consumption. Because my thoughts and opinions are predicated on bringing in sheer numbers of “seekers”. My thoughts and opinions are considered obsolete.

I might not be out there with my thoughts in the South, but in New England… trust me… I’m out there. Probably in California. Virginia. Even Houston…. Christianity is changing. Many ministers… particularly in Mega-Churches… are preaching a form of the gospel that offers all things to all men. A gospel that is not necessarily supported wholly in Holy Scripture. I find their theologies much more like philosophies. Psychologies. Off-the-shelf self-help guru recipes. Wholly human. Holey half-truths and half-baked histrionics conceived to make fallen humans feel better about themselves. Less guilty. Self-deception designed to allow the preachers and proclaimers to deny the sovereignty… the Holiness… of God Almighty. To make him smaller. Less stark. Less dangerous. Less scary. More merciful. More loving. In the ways that humans conceive love….

God IS Love, but God does not end there. God is incomprehensible to the human mind. Even God’s Love is unknowable to any human. The depth. The breadth. The infinity. The omniscience. The omnipotence.

Of everything that is God….
Of everything that God is….
NONE of THAT… is comprehensible to man….
And THAT… is hard for most men to accept….
The unknown….
The unknowable….
Of that which is so far above me that I cannot fathom…. Cannot understand…. Cannot even begin to conceive… the basest… the most foul… the most contemptible concept….
Well… that’s just hard for human intellectuals to accept.
That is an affront to our dignity.
A slander of my intelligence.
A challenge to my autonomy.
An abrogation of my own sovereignty.
Which is PRECISELY what God demands….
Submission to his higher authority.

But… of course… that’s just my opinion…. And MY opinion is definitely flawed.

Meanwhile… all of this is nothing new….
In the Old Testament religious and political leaders sought the counsel of prophets who would “prophesy beer and wine”. In the New Testament Paul warns Timothy that false prophets will arise and many will be fooled… because they preach an easy path to grace.

It’s nothing new. It’s how God separates out his Remnant. The True Shepherd knows his sheep and the sheep know his voice. That voice… is the Word…. The Word is the Lamb. The is the Lord. God is ONE. We mere humans often miss that.

But… of course… that’s just my opinion…. And MY opinion is definitely flawed.

Reflections on I Timothy 2:3-7: God’s Timing is Perfect… Because God is Perfect….

1 Timothy 2:3-7 English Standard Version (ESV)

This is good, and (A)it is pleasing in the sight of (B)God our Savior, who desires (C)all people to be saved and (D)to come to (E)the knowledge of the truth. For (F)there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man[a] Christ Jesus, (G)who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is (H)the testimony given (I)at the proper time. (J)For this I was appointed a preacher and an apostle ((K)I am telling the truth, I am not lying), (L)a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.

Sometimes man skips over things that explain “difficult text” without resorting to “historical” or “cultural context” because simply using Scripture to support arguments may not fit our agenda. Sometimes man views our desires… our glory… as superior to God’s Will. Even though we don’t recognize that we are creeping towards apostasy. Idolatry….

Paul says that it’s good for Christians to pray for Salvation and Enlightenment… knowledge of God’s Saving Grace… for ALL mankind… even though not everyone will be Saved… because not everyone is one of God’s Elect. Still… praying for the Lost is good. Not because they have any power to save themselves and not because they even have Free Will to choose: because perhaps God will change his mind. Or… because by praying for other sinners… we may gain insight into our own Sin…. Look at ourselves. And… learn more about True Repentance. Turning away from our Sin towards God’s Grace in Faith… and work out our Salvation, not through works, but through Faith.

Demanding that God give me my way…. Believing that my work… my sacrifice… my family… any such Worldly thing… entitles me to demand anything from God… is utter foolishness. Hubris. Idolatry.

Redemptive Movement hermeneutics teaches that Scripture is not enough. God’s Will is not fully described in Scripture: Christianity is on a “trajectory” that empowers man. That “trajectory”… that is not contained or even hinted at in Scripture… outweighs Scripture. Church Growth philosophy seems to suggest that anyone who disagrees with the new “trajectory” will inhibit church growth… and should be excluded from membership… in the name of Unity of the Body…. Moses, Paul, most (or all) of the Major and Minor Prophets, and even Jesus would probably have been shown the door of their churches, if they dared to suggest that they were not diligently following Scripture.

This is some of what John had to say about false prophets:

1 John 2:15-29 English Standard Version (ESV)

Do Not Love the World

15 (A)Do not love the world or the things in the world. (B)If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—(C)the desires of the flesh and (D)the desires of the eyes and pride of life[a]—is not from the Father but is from the world. 17 And (E)the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.

Warning Concerning Antichrists

18 Children, (F)it is the last hour, and as you have heard that (G)antichrist is coming, so now (H)many antichrists have come. (I)Therefore we know that it is the last hour. 19 (J)They went out from us, but they were not of us; for (K)if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out, (L)that it might become plain that they all are not of us. 20 But you have been (M)anointed by (N)the Holy One, and (O)you all have knowledge.[b] 21 I write to you, not because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and because no lie is of the truth. 22 Who is the liar but (P)he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is (Q)the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son. 23 (R)No one who denies the Son has the Father. Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also. 24 Let (S)what you heard from the beginning abide in you. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, then (T)you too will abide in the Son and in the Father. 25 And this is the promise that he made to us[c](U)eternal life.

26 I write these things to you about (V)those who are trying to deceive you. 27 But (W)the anointing that you received from him abides in you, and (X)you have no need that anyone should teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about everything, and (Y)is true, and is no lie—just as it has taught you, abide in him.

Children of God

28 And now, little children, abide in him, so that (Z)when he appears (AA)we may have confidence and not shrink from him in shame at his (AB)coming. 29 If you know that (AC)he is righteous, you may be sure that (AD)everyone who practices righteousness has been born of him.

Lot me get back to I Timothy 2: verse 5 is plethoric with meaning.

1 Timothy 2:5 English Standard Version (ESV)

For (A)there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man[a] Christ Jesus,

Footnotes:

  1. 1 Timothy 2:5 men and man render the same Greek word that is translated people in verses 1 and 4

Cross references:

  1. 1 Timothy 2:5 : See Gal. 3:20

That expounds on this and speaks to the Trinitarian concept that states that God and Jesus and the Holy Spirit are One.

Deuteronomy 6:4 English Standard Version (ESV)

“Hear, O Israel: (A)The Lord our God, the Lord is one.[a]

Footnotes:

  1. Deuteronomy 6:4 Or The Lord our God is one Lord; or The Lord is our God, the Lord is one; or The Lord is our God, the Lord alone

First, God is One. That has multiple meanings. God is Great – as in the GREATEST! Above ALL things. God alone is worthy of Praise and ALL Glory. God does not change. His Word does not change. His Will does not change. God is Perfect and is Perfection – Fully Completed! NOTHING needs to change or be changed or augmented. The idea of Evolution cannot and SHOULD NOT be applied to God. To do so is to demean God and to attempt to elevate man, thus attempting to usurp God’s Authority because we refuse to accept God’s Sovereignty.

Second, Jesus is the only Mediator between God and man. Scripture does not allow for the concept of man having authority to “Reverse the Curse” that God spoke in Genesis 3: when God spoke the Curse, he also prescribed the Cure. That prescription is none other than Jesus Christ himself. To believe man has evolved or is evolving or will ever evolve to the point that God needs our help is nothing more than pure, unadulterated hubris. That message comes from the minds of men, or more nefariously, the mouth of Satan, not Scripture, which is the Word of God. True Christians must be careful lest we are deceived.

Do you want to talk about God’s timing?

1 Timothy 2:6 English Standard Version (ESV)

(A)who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is (B)the testimony given (C)at the proper time.

Let’s talk about Social Context… and put this puppy to bed!

Rome was a Republic. They had the same issues America does right now: legislative gridlock. The answer… to that problem… to that inhibition to the Growth Movement of Rome… was to take the Civil Authority out of the hands of the people… who could not be trusted to do what was best for Rome… rather than for themselves….

So… in 49 B.C. Caesar crossed the Rubicon. Julius Caesar led his army South across the Rubicon River in direct challenge to the Roman Senate. At that point, he was in direct confrontation with the statutes that give him authority as a Roman General: he chose to become an outlaw. He conquered Rome and made himself Emperor. Then… he established the Imperial Cult and made himself a god to whom homage must be paid by all citizens at least annually. The Roman Empire began to expand its borders and control. By the time of Jesus, Rome was the greatest and most expansive power on Earth. That allowed for the survival and expansion of Christianity. The timing suited God’s Will and Purpose. God is not restricted in advancing his Kingdom to what Christians choose to do. God is Sovereign not only over True Christians, but False Prophets and Civil Authorities and Immoral and Amoral Philosophical Movements and Hollywood Icons and  Anarchist and Anachronists and even Antichrists.

Not everyone who claims to know God’s Will or says that they are proclaiming God’s Word… really is….

Scripture states that some of the most effective “ministers”… will be Antichrists….

But… True Christians can’t claim that we were deceived. That excuse will not be acceptable when it counts. We are called to STUDY Scripture so that we FOLLOW Scripture… and discern those who are not speaking… or teaching… TRUTH. That is why the restrictions on who should teach are so narrow. Because the role is so important.

God desires to raise Godly offspring. We cannot do that if we refuse to Submit to Scripture in humility. We cannot do that if we demand give us authority that he specifies in Scripture is not for us to have. We deceive ourselves. And… we deceive others. Just like our father…. If we chose to lift ourselves as idols… attempt to elevate ourselves as god… and usurp God’s Authority….

That seems very dangerous to me.

Even Paul submitted to God’s Authority and humbled himself. That’s a good example to follow. May God receive ALL Glory and Praise.

Reflections on I Timothy 2:1-2.

I Timothy 2:1-2 English Standard Version (ESV)

Pray for All People

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, (A)for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and (B)dignified in every way.

I recently heard a sermon in which someone presented I Timothy 2:1-2 rather contemptuously as an example where Paul’s teachings are no longer relevant: most people don’t even have kings anymore… so man has evolved… and that’s a good thing….

I don’t know about you, but to me… that interpretation seems to suggest that Paul was ignorant… and that the Holy Spirit… and by implication… God… are idiots… or incompetent… or

I was struck by the supreme superficiality… the utter mischaracterization… the pedantic lack of understanding… of the passage. Particularly… the inability to understand THE CORRECT SOCIAL CONTEXT!!! Kings ruled by divine right. That wasn’t something that started in the Dark Ages in Europe. That was the Social Context from which God was setting Israel apart as a nation. The king or ruler was the incarnate embodiment of the authority of the national gods. That persisted through the Holy Roman Empire, is the rational for Papal authority and was the underlying reason for the authority of the Roman Emperor. That is what Pontifex Superanus means: the official title of the Roman Emperor usurped by the Pope. The Roman Emperor, like Pharaoh and all other supreme leaders, served to unite secular, state and religious authority in one person. The Roman variation of the religion of the pagan Greeks set the Emperor up as a god, just like Pharaoh, and that lasted until Constantine, who set God up as the highest authority with the Emperor under him. The Roman Emperor was the head of the Orthodox Church until Constantinople was captured by the Turks, but the idea persisted… and still persists… in the Anglican Church. The Constitutional Separation of Church and State was not a call to apostasy, but rather a necessary mechanism for sustaining and protecting Religious Freedom… which was important enough to be protected first. Another example within the Social Context is the Tent of Meeting and even the Temple. The temples of the gods of the people of Canaan and the surrounding areas were built facing East… so that the rays of the Sun… represent the Sun god… who was usually the representation of the supreme god… would enter the temple immediately. The ziggurats, which were an example of one architectural plan for temples of the surrounding people, were built as a set of steps with the temple at the apex… closest to heaven… closest to god. The steps were so that the god could descend to be with the people. The Tower of Babel was so that man could raise himself up… and become like unto gods. Which is the same underlying rational for secular humanism… and Evolutionary Christianity…. Man is evolving on a trajectory… to be gods…. That is a perfect recitation of secular humanist hermaneutics! And Redemptive Movement hermaneutics as well apparently.

Did he not get what Paul was saying? Did he not understand the Social and Scriptural Context that Paul was presenting? I don’t know what Commentaries the pastor used to prepare his sermon, but the only one I consulted, which was the one volume 21st Century Edition of the New Bible Commentary states explicitly that Paul had two ideas in mind: we have a Christian duty to pray for ALL authorities with the ability to impact the lives of Christians without regard for their religion or even whether they are just or unjust (elsewhere he establishes that ALL authority comes from God for his purpose), and Paul also explains the purpose of prayer: so that “Christians may live peaceful and quiet lives in all Godliness and Holiness”… which is the theme for the rest of the passage (I Timothy 2:1-15). Less straightforward… still obvious… is Paul’s allusion to God’s Ultimate Purpose as expressed repeatedly through Scripture: Universal Redemption. Man is commanded to accept the circumstances we find ourselves in because God has specifically created and equipped each of us to Glorify God by serving him in the mission he created especially for us… and that mission leads to the Salvation of even kings… regardless of whether they are just or unjust… and that furthers God’s Kingdom. Reference the Pharaohs and Sennacherib and  Nebuchadnezzer and Cyrus and Darius.

Now… Redemptive Movement Hermaneutics…. I was offended when the pastor spoke his meme or motto or catch phrase… or mantra… echoing what was said during the first vote in 2007 that “We are here to ‘Reverse the Curse'”. I gave him a pass back then. I tried to believe that such clear apostasy had not infiltrated the leadership of Grace Chapel, but that statement is clearly heretical and should never have been spoken from the pulpit in a church service unless it was to refute the humanistic error. That is clearly an affront to God’s Sovereign Authority and cannot be supported in Scripture. Period. That is a clear expression of Darwinian Evolution on steroids! That idea comes directly out of Darwin as filtered through Hegel and Nietzsche and Freud and Marx and seeks to usurp the authority of God. There is no other trajectory imaginable other than complete rebellion against God and the elevation of Man… as deity. And that… is clearly apostasy.

This message appears to be an attempt to lead a congregation towards the tenets of the Redemptive Movement hermaneutics and Growth Movement philosophies… evolve past… and distance a local church from authoritative Scriptural Integrity. I fear for the pastor’s and the church leader’s immortal souls because the blood of people they lead down the rosy path to oblivion are going to be on their head when Jesus judges the quick… and the not-so-quick… and the spiritually slow… and the spiritually dead.

Be gone. I never knew you.

But…. But…. But…. Didn’t I….

Yes. You glorified yourself. So… you received your reward. Before men. Which is what you desired.

Trifling with I Timothy 2:1-2 is bad enough, but trifling with God is a serious matter. Someone needs to talk to him and the rest of the Board and Pastoral staff and correct THEIR trajectory. Believing that “God needs our help” and “We are here to ‘Reverse the Curse'” and injecting Darwin and Nietzsche and Freud into a hermaneutics that transcends Scripture and castrates God… is clearly apostasy and represents a clear and present danger in the time of clandestine Spiritual Warfare conducted as Psychological and Guerrilla Operations.

Though the agenda was suggested previously, the underlying justifications… the operative beliefs of those involved… was never made clear. Not even while the opposition was being silenced and a watered down veneer was being created. Sometimes seemingly Christian leaders attempt to create a patina of sanctity over a facade of Scriptural Integrity. At least that’s how it appears on the surface… which is all they have allowed to be seen. Have these church leaders presented candidates for Elder and ordination and commissioning of pastors and other ministers without ever informing the congregation what their sincere beliefs were? That would constitute fraud, if they knew or even suspected that their beliefs are heterodox. That’s serious business.

I don’t know that that has happened…. I’m not accusing anyone of committing fraud. I’m simply stating my understanding of Scripture. God is in control.

I personally need to examine myself and my motives. Make sure that my own anger remains righteous. Solely focused on the affront to God’s Sovereignty.

Getting angry is OK. Responding in anger is NOT! Responding in anger is also usurping God’s authority. We are called to redirect all Christians, even leaders, back towards Orthodoxy. God withholds Judgment for himself. The most any man or church is called to do is to release heretics into the World for Satan to deal with them… so that they will turn back… and God will not be forced to judge them. That is an example of God’s Redemptive Purpose in which even Satan submits to God’s Will.

Isn’t Grace… and God’s Sovereignty… AMAZING?
